This 4-session workshop is designed for beginners with no yoga experience, or for those with not much exposure to Ashtanga Yoga. Participants will be guided in a small, intimate setting, allowing for individual attention.

Sessions will be held on Saturdays and Sundays: Session I: February 9 & 10; Session II: February 16 & 17, 2019 at AFC. (Students should plan to attend both sessions.)
 
“Ashtanga” means “8-limbed method,” which includes a number of mind-body elements that practitioners slowly attenuate and control. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a set series with specific inhale and exhale for every movement which when coupled with attention contributes to greater health and wellbeing. You will be introduced to these dimensions, especially through an introduction to postures, breathing and concentrations practices, and deep relaxation. We will build upon your practice progressively each week, and by the end of the four weeks you will have a firm foundation on which to continue your yoga practice at Ashtanga Yoga UVA or even on your own!

Each Class will include Yoga theory and principles, A Mysore primer, and review of the postures learned the week before. Participants will be guided at a slow and even pace through the postures that were previously. This class provides a great opportunity to review and apply what was taught on Saturday, and it will include a brief intro into Yoga Philosophy.

Benefits of Ashtanga practice may include improved strength, stamina and flexibility, improved breathing and breath control, heightened ability to focus, and increased memory.
 
* There are no prerequisites for this class in regards to age or physical condition. However, if you have any questions about whether or not you can attend this introductory course, please consult with your doctor. It is not necessary to have completed session I, the September series.
