Building Innovation - UVA Today Features Contemplative Commons

Resiliency rooms are part of a network of spaces on Grounds dedicated to relaxation and contemplation. They are open to all students, faculty, and staff at the University. Some of the spaces welcome community members. All are intended for quiet reflection or contemplative group activities, and are technology-free. See details about each space below.
Student Health and Wellness Building Spaces at 550 Brandon Avenue.
The new Student Health and Wellness building has opened reflection rooms on the first floor to all students from 8am to 5pm. These rooms join a network of dedicated spaces across Grounds for students to sit quietly in stillness or practice other forms of contemplation that can help them de-stress and recenter themselves.
Gibson 204 (Crescent Room)
This quiet drop-in space in the South Lawn complex is open to all students, faculty, and staff. The room is accessible via swipe with a valid UVA ID, and has the same hours as Gibson Hall: (Monday-Thursday: 7:30am-10:30 pm, Friday: 7:30 am-6:00 pm, the building is closed on weekends.) Group reservation requests can be placed via csc@virginia.edu.
This room was transformed into a multi-purpose, restorative space in 2015. It serves as a multi-purpose, restorative space for contemplative courses and workshops. It is solely available for academic courses with a contemplative focus and for contemplative workshops, presentations, research and drop-in sessions. CCI encourages staff, faculty, and students to visit in between classes, meetings, clinicals, etc., to reflect, re-charge and take care of themselves, when the room is not scheduled. McLeod 2025 (Maria Tussi Kluge Resilience Room)
This space was remodeled in 2015 to be used for contemplative workshops, research, and drop-ins. CCI encourages staff, faculty, and students to visit in order to reflect, re-charge and engage in self-care, when the room is not scheduled. Visit CCI's website for the current schedule.

Maxine Platzer Lynn Women's Center (The Room to Breathe)
The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women's Center at UVA has recently renovated the "Room to Breath" room complete with a stress-relieving finger labyrinth, white noise machine, books, and chocolate. It is a resource for the UVA community to utilize whenever they need that moment of privacy, safety, and quiet. There's no need to make an appointment. Hours: 9am-5pm. Interspace Room 466 (Meditation & Reflection Room)
Room 466 on the 4th floor of Newcomb Hall has been designated as a quiet space for meditation, reflection and prayer for University of Virginia students, faculty, and staff. Currently the room is in flux and does not have the accomodations pictured (i.e., pillows, furniture). We are exploring how the space will be utilized in the future. In the mean time, it is still available. The room is centrally located and is especially convenient for those who wish to pause between classes or events during the day. The hours of operation follow the Newcomb Hall building hours. If you need more information, please contact Multicultural Student Services.
UVA Law Library (Collaborative Classroom space) Open when not being used as a Law classroom.
A portion of the UVA Law Library’s 2nd floor Collaborative Classroom space is equipped to encourage students to relax, recharge, and study comfortably. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to enjoy the space when it is not being used for class and other scheduled activities (see information about building access and Law Library hours). The Law Library also has a set of books and other materials about mindfulness available to check out in its first floor circulation desk. The Castle - A UVA Restaurant Conducive to Mindful Eating
The Castle is a plant-forward restaurant operated by UVA Dining that encourages its guests to “Live simply, eat joyfully and savor tastes that inspire the mind.” The space was designed to encourage mindful eating to complement its plant-forward menu of salads, grain bowls and paninis. There is a mindful eating space that includes a library book exchange filled with mindfulness-focused books as well as noise canceling headphones. The space also has its own plant wall and will feature art from UVA students.
The Castle is a great place to stop and enjoy a plant-based, mindful meal. It is located on the first floor of Bonnycastle dorm in the first year residence area on McCormick Road. Operating hours are 11am-Midnight, Monday-Friday and 11am-8pm Saturday and Sunday.
