In the context of college life and beyond, what does it mean to have and be a good friend? What is the nature of friendship, and how can it be integral to a successful and happy college experience? We will explore the qualities needed to be a good friend in Eastern and Western philosophical contexts, and how developing those qualities can lead to wisdom and compassion—skills that can improve our interactions with others and which can help us all become “better” human beings.

Instructor: Clifford Maxwell (cam4z@Virginia.edu)
COLA courses are 1-credit seminars capped at 18 UVA open to all new first-year students enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences, all of whom are also assigned to the instructor as advisees. They are topically focused on an area identified by the faculty member; they also include a significant advising component centered on undergraduate issues (e.g., choosing a major, study abroad opportunities, undergraduate research, etc.).
