Fall 2015: Medicinal Herbs: Creating Your Natural Medicine Cabinet - NCAR 105

Mon. Sep 14, 2015 - Mon. Oct 19, 2015 (6 weeks)
Every Monday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Looking for alternatives to costly manufactured medications and remedies? Come learn about and directly experience the foundational aspects of western herbalism in this six-week course. To maximize plant-viewing opportunities before the first frost, the course begins with three sessions at Sacred Plant Traditions educational center, followed by three more traditional classroom sessions at U.Va. Students first learn about the history of medicinal herb use and about the process of working with the land to create an ideal garden space. Plenty of outdoor instructional time in the garden empowers students to safely identify and effectively use both commonly cultivated and wild medicinal plants. A tour of a working home apothecary enables students to see, smell, and taste herbal preparations made there on-site. Hands-on demonstrations illustrate how to process the herbs and make basic herbal preparations, thereby providing the skills necessary to create a home herbal apothecary or herbal first aid kit.
Instructors: Kathleen Maier, RH, PA, has been a practicing herbalist for over twenty years. Her training as a physician’s assistant allows her to translate the language of medicine we know today and ground it in the wisdom of earth-centered practices known for millennia. Heather Wetzel, RH, MEd, has been serving Charlottesville as a community herbalist and herbal educator since 2007. She practices energetic herbalism and specializes in creating individualized wellness plans that support women and children’s health.
