The University of Virginia School of Law was founded in in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson as one of the original subjects taught at his academical village. Virginia Law is the fourth-oldest active law school in the United States. The law school offers the J.D., LL.M., and S.J.D. degrees in law and hosts visiting scholars, visiting researchers and a number of legal research centers.

Virginia Law is perennially regarded as one of the top 10 most prestigious and selective law schools in the United States. U.S. News & World Report currently ranks Virginia Law 7th in the nation,and ranks Virginia Law as 6th among major law firm recruiters.In the 2010 Super Lawyers Law School Rankings, Virginia Law ranks 4th in the nation.
