Spring 2017 : Music, Sound, and Embodiment - MUSI 4520

We will consider various intersections among sound, music, consciousness, and embodiment. Topics will include the embodied experiences of performers, embodiment in relation to listeners’ experiences of classical music, trance states, music therapy, subjectivity in clubbing, improvisation, environmental sound, and the experimental practices of John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, and the Fluxus group. Class meetings will include discussion of readings and extensive experiential work (contemplation, movement, improvisation, and performances from verbal scores).
