CSC is Piloting New Programming for Fall 2024

This fall 2024 semester, the Contemplative Sciences Center and partners will pilot select activities for UVA students and the general public; and host several academic classes. The building will not have public business hours but will be open during that programming.
Piloted programming includes drop-in opportunities for students as well as events that are open to the public including Meditation from the Dell.
When possible, programs are offered in collaboration with another University office, department, initiative, or CIO. Student programming is created in collaboration with the CCSA (Contemplative Commons Student Advisors).
Most offerings are screen- or tech-free events but might include amplified sound or recorded music. Tech-free events do not use amplified sound or recorded music. For example, a guided meditation may be screen-free but use recorded music while a mindful walk around the Dell may be tech-free enhancing attention to the natural world.
Open to UVA and the public:
In an extension of the popular Meditation on the Lawn series, Join CSC for a short, guided meditation in person at the Contemplative Commons (in person only until further notice). Start your Tuesday with a contemplative pause and prepare for the day ahead.

Ashtanga Yoga
Our Ashtanga Yoga program is led by Certified Instructor John Bultman. The program aims to help people of all levels develop a sustainable yoga practice for greater health and well-being.
Student-Facing Programming:
Let the stress of the week go with gentle yoga on Friday afternoons. This 90-minute, all-levels yoga class allows you to begin your weekend with intention and a focus on rest.
- Light movement (sitting, standing, bending); no experience necessary; equipment provided
- Fridays, 3:00-4:30pm
- Location: Contemplative Commons (TBD)

Take a guided mindful walk around the Dell and Contemplative Commons to reconnect with nature and yourself. These walks will be outside when the weather permits and indoors when it doesn’t.
- Light movement (walking, standing); no experience necessary; no equipment required
- Mondays, 4:00-4:45 pm
- Location: Meet in the Contemplative Commons 1st Floor Lobby
- Instructor: CCSA students (various) and CSC staff (various)
Connect with your body and explore new contemplative practices all while taking a mid-day break! These drop-in classes give you a taste of movement-based practices such as stretching, light yoga, tai chi, Qigong, dance, and much more!
- Movement (standing, bending, walking); no experience necessary; equipment provided
- Wednesdays and Thursday, 11:50am-12:20pm
- Location: Contemplative Commons (TBD)
- Instructor: CSC staff (various), guests
This drop-in session offers a reflective writing prompt for you to journal about and the time and space to write. Take the prompt to go or sit in the Commons and write with us!

Salon Research Series
CSC's research team is convening curated transdisciplinary public dialogues each month on topics related to contemplative research in the Contemplative Commons. Scholars, scientists, artists, and specialists from diverse perspectives are invited to share their work in the format of a facilitated dialogue to generate, leverage, and advance collective knowledge.
