George Mumford is an expert on mindfulness and performance. Since 1989, he’s been honing
his gentle, but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques with people from locker rooms to board rooms and from Yale to jail.

Michael Jordan credits Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership, helping the Bulls to six NBA championships. Mumford has also worked with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, and countless other NBA players, Olympians, executives, and artists.

Mumford’s book The Mindful Athlete is both memoir and instruction guide. He believes everyone has a masterpiece within, which he can show you how to access. While at the University of Massachusetts—where he roomed with future Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving—injuries forced Mumford out of basketball and eventually into an addiction to pain medication and drugs. With the help of meditation and mindfulness, he got clean and made it his mission to teach and work with others.

Former Cavalier All-American Steve Garland is serving in his 15th season as head wrestling coach at Virginia. A master motivator, recruiter and coach, Garland has worked diligently to push the Cavaliers among the nation’s elite. The results of Garland’s perseverance are evident.

In Garland’s first 14 seasons at Virginia, the Cavaliers earned 13 All-America honors and 19 ACC individual titles while qualifying 82 to the NCAA Championships and recording Top-25 team finishes at NCAAs in seven of the last 10 years the event was competed. He also led the Cavaliers to two ACC Championships, claiming the title in 2010 and 2015.

A practitioner of mindfulness himself, Garland participated in the May, 2020 Virtual Meditation on the Lawn event where he shared a five-step strategy he personally uses and teaches his wrestlers for cultivating resilience and motivation particularly during times of struggle. He called this strategy TACOS, an acronym for Thanksgiving, Acknowledgment, Commitment, Others, and Self.
