Job Opening: Contemplative Commons Director

The Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC) is accepting applications for a Contemplative Commons (CC) Director position. The position will oversee the programming of events and activities hosted at the Contemplative Commons building and on grounds in alignment with our mission of promoting contemplations, connection, and research to enhance student flourishing at the University of Virginia. The CC Director will use the CSC missions and strategy as a guide to develop a coherent program of events, courses, and activities, relying heavily on collaborations with University partners. The Director will have administrative oversight of all events hosted within the building and its landscaped areas.
 
The new Contemplative Commons building, a 57,000-square-foot building, is scheduled to open in late fall 2024. It is located at the heart of UVA Grounds by the Dell Pond and is designed to bring students and faculty from different schools and disciplines together, foster collaboration, and experiment with new ways of teaching and learning.  During the early construction and launching period, the Director will work with the Executive Director and Chief of Staff to plan the facility's short- and medium-term utilization. The work will continue with development of a multi-year plan that advances CSC's programming, events, etc. In addition, and they will serve as the point person for CSC's expanding engagement with partners outside the University, locally and nationally.
 
The successful candidate will be expected to: 
 
Serve as a leader in strategic planning and directing the activities within a large, complex building in alignment with the mission of the CSC. 
 
Work as part of the CSC leadership team to collaborate in planning and implementing programs 
 
Engage with stakeholders across the University and externally to explore opportunities to develop creative, artistic, research-driven, and contemplative programming and events. 
 
Lead CSC's efforts at expanding its work in engaging and supporting surrounding communities. 
 
Coordinate all aspects of event planning in coordination with relevant implementation and management staff, including developing and monitoring a budget and timeline. 
 
Ensure the implementation of readily available and clearly documented procedures and instructions for use of the facility, technology, etc., to ensure maximum utilization of the building's most innovative capacities. Will develop, communicate, and implement clear policies and procedures to ensure effective and efficient governance of the facility while also maximizing space utilization. 
 
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. 
 
 
Qualified candidates must have: 
  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Experience: Seven years of experience. 
  • Experience strategic thinking and execution 
  • Experience developing, and managing events 
  • Demonstrated deep commitment to creative programming 
  • Experience with contemplation and/or wellbeing programming 
  • Experience engaging with local communities 
  • Managerial experience and excellent facilitation, collaboration, communication and presentation skills. 
 
Preferences 
  • Advanced degree in education or related disciplines 
  • Experience managing events or creating programing in higher education. 
  • Experience engaging with diverse populations, including internal and external constituents. 
  • Experience working with creative arts programming. 
  • Experience working with digital technology to create experiential programming. 

This position is In-Person located in Charlottesville, VA.  

The anticipated start date is January 2024. 
 
This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience and can be found at the Workday job posting.
