Nia Augustine is a first-generation, fourth-year student majoring in Kinesiology in the school of Education and Human Development. During her first semester at UVA, she was introduced to contemplation after taking the course, "The Art and Science of Human Flourishing," with David Germano. Her introduction to contemplation fueled this curiosity towards mindfulness and other meditative practices and helped her cope with daily stressors.
As a result of this budding interest, Nia sought out a position as a student intern at CSC, allowing her to gain and bring awareness about contemplative practices to the UVA student body. In addition to her position at the center, Nia has been a president of the student-led club, Mind&Body at UVA
. This club is active on Grounds and works to promote mental health and physical well-being through weekly meetups.
Following her undergraduate education, Nia is attending Columbia University Master’s in Health Administration program to improve access and quality to healthcare in the U.S. healthcare system. In addition to integrating contemplative practices in these areas, she has learned the importance of the healing process at large.
