Spaces of the Contemplative Commons

The Contemplative Commons is a 57,000 square foot dynamic complex of spaces designed to foster organic exploration of new ways of experiencing the world. Situated within the Contemplative Commons, the Contemplative Sciences Center creates opportunities at the Commons, that center mind-body practices, integrate evidence-based programming designed to cultivate resilience, expand awareness, and foster meaningful connections. Light-filled indoor spaces, integrated outdoor areas, and art installations inspired by nature promote immersive experiences and afford opportunities for contemplative practice for students and the community.

In addition to the spaces highlighted below, the Contemplative Commons offers several spaces to reflect, study, or just gather with others, such as a

  • Seating within a Gingko tree-lined courtyard;
  • Indoor gallery space adjacent to the Dell Pond featuring access to the NINFEO and other curated art;
  • An open air terrace on the third floor suited for quiet contemplation, studying, or a small meet-up with friends

Following is a list of featured public spaces available when visiting the Contemplative Commons.

Situated next to the Contemplative Commons and consciously integrated into its design is a large pond called the Dell. A resevoir fed from a restored stream between Alderman Road and Emmet Street, the Dell is not only scenic but also functions to prevent erosion as well as filter the run-off water.

In the middle of the Contemplative Commons on the third floor is the Garden Terrace. An open area surrounded by the building decorated with a variety of plants, the Garden Terrace provides an outdoor space within the building for study, intimate conversation, and quiet reflection.

Modelling itself on Jefferson’s academic village, the design of the Contemplative Commons integrates indoor and outdoor spaces into a cohesive, integrated whole. Thus, at the geometric center of the building is a large, outdoor courtyard, containing a calming water feature surrounded by Ginkgo trees.

Mon-Thurs: 7:00am - 7:00pm; Fri: 7:00am - 5:00pm

NINFEO is an immersive sound, light, and sculptural experience housed on the first floor of the Contemplative Commons. NINFEO contains 3,320 laser-etched illuminated crystal blocks inspired by the water lilies of the Dell Pond. An infrared camera tracks the movement of fish, flora, and currents in the Dell and triggers a responsive light and sound system that infuses the installation.

Mon-Fri: 3:00 - 6:00pm

Located on the fourth floor of the Contemplative Commons (Studio 4A), The Conservatory is an immersive light & sound room where you can sit, meditate, or just listen to the soundscape. The Conservatory is currently playing “Reef Resounding” by UVA Professor of Music Matthew Burtner, a piece featuring midnight sounds of oysters and data sonification of reefs on the Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Mon-Thu: 9:00am - 6:00pm; Fri: 9:00am - 5:00pm

The drop-in meditation studio, Studio 3A, officially named “The Willow”, is a meditation and prayer space that serves as a sanctuary for people of all faiths, spiritualities, and those who seek quiet reflection. This space is open to everyone, regardless of background, belief, or tradition. It is walk-in only and cannot be reserved. Click the link for this space to see norms and instructions.
