Contemplative Sciences Center Research Assistant 

Position Overview

The Contemplative Sciences Center’s (CSC) CIRCL, Contemplative Innovation + Research Co-Lab, investigates and innovates contemplative practices and experiences through experimental studies. In AY 26-27, our primary studies will focus on meditation in natural and designed environments. Research Assistants will help to administer studies, recruit participants, manage research equipment, and collect data. The position is designed to mentor undergraduates in learning collaborative research methods and exposing students to contemplative practices. Based on interest and experience, there will also be opportunities for Research Assistants to train in advanced data collection procedures such as EEG/ECG. 

Position Commitment

  • 5-10 hours per week. This includes onsite sessions and weekly meetings with shifts scheduled to accommodate class schedules.
  • Attendance at all training sessions and managerial staff meetings is mandatory.
  • Availability during the Fall and Spring semesters. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Study Administration
    • Setting up and disassembling research equipment including VR equipment, wearable technologies, meditation cushions, and designated research spaces within the Contemplative Commons and at other onsite locations.
    • Welcoming and managing study participants in and between sessions.
    • Supplying research surveys and setting up the experiential sampling app on smart phones.
    • Administering demo experiences of contemplative technologies used in the lab. Troubleshooting issues as they arise. 
  • Recruitment
    • Helping promote studies to UVA students and the broader community. 
  • Event Support
    • Assisting with the operations of research events such as the monthly Research Salon.
  • Scholarship
    • Collating bibliographies of key literature in the Contemplative Sciences.
    • Assisting with the management of research data.
  • Other Duties as Assigned:
    • Assist with other relevant tasks or responsibilities as directed by the Director of Research or Research Manager. 

Qualifications & Skills 

  • Academic Requirements:
    • Must remain in good academic standing throughout the position.
    • Be an active student at the University.
  • Skills & Experience:
    • Ability to learn and administer new technologies.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Proven ability to demonstrate leadership, good judgment, and a positive influence on others.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
    • Previous experience in a research or student-centric organization is preferred but not required.
  • Professionalism:
    • Ability to maintain professionalism and represent UVA and the Contemplative Sciences Center positively.
    • Demonstrate responsibility in attire, conduct, and communication. 

By joining the CIRCL research team at the Contemplative Sciences Center, RAs will play an integral role in developing knowledge and know-how abound contemplation for the UVA community and beyond.
