Contemplative Commons Groundbreaking

The Contemplative Sciences Center along with numerous UVA leaders, faculty, staff, students, and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of the Contemplative Commons with an on-site ceremony on October 8, 2021. Attendants gathered on the former Dell basketball courts adjacent to Bavaro Hall to honor the building’s future as a new university hub for promoting student flourishing in academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities, interdisciplinary collaboration and research, and Charlottesville community engagement.

The Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC) at the University of Virginia has selected 20 new emerging social change leaders for the 2020 Dalai Lama Fellows program.

Student-Inspired Virtual Meditation on the Lawn Attracts Global Audience

The one-hour event was held via Zoom with footage of the Lawn in the background. It featured a guided meditation from UVA Associate Professor of Nursing Sam Green and a panel of speakers including CSC Executive Director David Germano, UVA head wrestling coach Steve Garland, and UVA palliative care liaison nurse Jonathan Bartels. Following the panel’s remarks on practices of mindfulness, resilience, compassion, and well-being, the speakers participated in a live Q&A session in which webinar participants inquired about such things as how to begin meditating and for how long to practice.
