Contemplative Commons Program Assistant
Position Overview
The Contemplative Commons Program Assistants make a year-long commitment (August 19, 2026 – May 23, 2027) to develop and pilot programs in the Contemplative Commons that expand beyond well-known contemplative practices such as yoga and meditation. To achieve this, assistants will work collectively to identify the interests and wellbeing needs of UVA students and address them through relevant and creative programming in the Contemplative Commons.
Position Commitment
- Minimum 5 hours per week, with an average closer to 10 hours per week, with much of the work operating independently rather than in traditional shift formatting.
- Those interested in working additional hours will have the opportunity to do so.
- Attendance at all training sessions and managerial staff meetings is mandatory.
- This position will require availability during the Fall and Spring semesters from August 19, 2026, through May 23, 2027.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Development:
- Work to identify interests and well-being needs of UVA students and build programming to help support the development of these skills and practices.
- Learn the skills necessary to make values-driven decisions throughout the programming process.
- Collaborative University Engagement:
- Engage clubs, organizations, and groups around Grounds to work on creating opportunities for collaborative programming both in the Commons and around UVA.
- Program Implementation:
- Provide support during programming. This may take the form of collecting necessary supplies, being present to facilitate the program, and/or helping to clean up and assess the success of programming. Providing support is not limited to these and are instead used as examples.
- Event Support:
- When student programming takes place in the building, Programming Advisors will have the opportunity to provide event specific support to ensure a smooth event experience for fellow students. This represents a way for programming advisors to get additional hours, while also helping to connect with student groups around Grounds.
- Other Duties as Assigned:
- Assist with any other tasks or responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Director of Student Engagement. As a relatively new space, there is often opportunities for exploring new ways for Student Advisors to have an impact within the Commons.

- Academic Requirements:
- Must remain in good academic standing throughout the position.
- Be an active student at the University.
- Skills & Experience:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong sense of creativity and a willingness to try new things.
- Proven ability to demonstrate leadership, good judgment, and a positive influence on others.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to self-motivate and take initiative.
- Previous experience in a student-centric organization is preferred but not required.
- Professionalism:
- Ability to maintain professionalism and represent UVA and the Contemplative Commons positively.
- Demonstrate responsibility in attire, conduct, and communication.
By joining the Contemplative Commons programming team, you will play an integral role in supporting providing a service to the UVA and Charlottesville area and help inform the community about the Commons and our mission.
Additional Requirements
- This position requires moderate amounts of walking around the Contemplative Commons. Must be able to lift ~25 lbs.
- This position will require a valid Driver's License and passing a background check.
