The Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC) at the University of Virginia is seeking motivated and passionate undergraduate and graduate students to join our team for the summer 2026 and / or the 2026-2027 academic year. 

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to CSC’s mission of advancing student flourishing, interdisciplinary research, and innovative programs that integrate contemplative practices into academic and community life. The student experience is at the core of our work, and your perspectives will directly help shape our programs and effectiveness on Grounds. 

Available Positions 

The Contemplative Sciences Center offers four distinct tracks to match your skills and interests: 

  1. Operations Assistant: Assist in maintaining and managing the spaces and operations for the Contemplative Commons to support diverse activities within a thriving contemplative environment. 
  2. Programs Assistant: Help design and implement programs and events that foster mindfulness, wellbeing, and academic exploration. 
  3. Research Assistant: Contribute to groundbreaking projects exploring the intersections of contemplation, immersive environments, and transformative technologies. 
  4. Communications Assistant: Support key functions in communications, with an emphasis on social media marketing, graphic design, or writing.  

Note: We strongly encourage students to start with the Operations track to gain a solid foundation in operationalizing activities within the Commons before exploring other tracks of interest. 

Employment Details 

While hours and duties may vary, we value all work equally and uphold equity through a standardized and consistent pay scale based on years of employment with the Contemplative Sciences Center. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of shared professional development, collaboration, cross-training opportunities, and a strong commitment to the center’s mission. 

  • Hours: 
    • Between 5-15 hours per week during the academic year. 
    • The Operations track will be on the heavier end of the spectrum, looking for commitments of 10-15 hours per week. 
    • The Programs, Research, and Communications tracks will be on the lighter end of the spectrum, looking for commitments of 5-10 hours per week. 
  • Compensation: 
    • Undergraduates – $15/hour during your first year with CSC, with a $1/hour increase for each additional year. 
    • Graduates – $20/hour starting during your first year with CSC, with a $1/hour increase for each additional year. 
    • Higher pay rates are available for summer employment. 
  • Schedule: 
    • The building will generally be open  7:00 - 8:00 PM Monday-Thursday, 7:00 - 6:00 PM Friday, and likely weekend hours between 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Shifts will be between 2-5 hours at a time. 
  • Professional Development: 
    • Students participate in group onboarding, professional development opportunities, and social connection activities, creating a supportive and enriching work environment.

All undergraduate and graduate students at UVA are welcome to apply. We value diverse perspectives and experiences and encourage applicants from all fields of study. 

Commitment 

We are seeking students who can commit to working throughout the academic year. Students must be open to community-oriented work where we cross-train, share responsibilities, and support the whole over the individual. Opportunities for summer work may also be available.
